 这个单词的出处难以考证，据猜测是来自古希腊语“dog-like”的意思。也难怪Cynic School被翻译为犬儒学派。
 Cynical的中文译词非常难以表达，也几乎只有“愤世嫉俗”这个成语可以相对准确地表达。所谓愤世嫉俗者，就是指认为人都是被私利驱动，没有真正的诚信。因此，他们往往无法相信美好的结果，觉得做任何事情都不值得，缺乏意义。从浅层次上，cynical也有嘲讽或者玩世不恭的意思。名词Cynic就是指愤世嫉俗的人。
